    Description
Boring Iron Pipe used in the 1896-87 scientific investigations at the Funafuti atoll led by Professors William Sollas and Tannant William Edgeworth David to resolve the accuracy of Charles Darwin's theory of coral atoll formation, attached to a wood stand with a presentation plaque given by Andre Rossfelder and his Geomarix Company to William R. Moran, approximately 9 inches wide, 5 inches deep, and 4 inches high, mounted on a 10 by 5 1/2 by 2 inch wood base, in excellent condition considering the iron has corroded over the years as expected after being used in the ocean and then exposed to air for the last 125 years.  There also seem to be some encrustations on its surface.
The expedition to the South Pacific atoll was sponsored by the Royal Society of London.   The goal was to take core samples of the atoll to see whether traces of shallow-water organisms could be found deep down in the coral.  In the 1896 investigation, the first boring which used this iron pipe was able to penetrate just 100 feet.  A second boring a year later in an 1897 expedition led by Edgeworth David reached 557 feet.  Technology at that time was insufficient to bore to the base of the atoll, and the world had to wait until after World War II for a boring to reach the base approximately 4,200 feet down, which incidentally, provided the evidence to verify Darwin's theory.
Andre Rossfelder, the donor of this piece, was a marine geologist who ran his own companies from
1972 to 1995.  First he founded Geomarex, with the focus of discovering shallow-water marine mineral resources in the Pacific; then Rossfelder Corp., developing underwater electrical vibrocoring for sediment sampling, underwater coring and sediment coring.  With these interests, it is not surprising that he sought and was then able to acquire historic coring equipment like this pipe with its direct connection to Darwin.
